Mongolia’s Gobi Desert and Winter Camel Festival

January 2027

Join me for a one-week winter journey into Mongolia’s Gobi Desert, where we will photograph the remarkable Winter Camel Festival and spend time with nomadic herding families living in one of the country’s most remote and striking landscapes.

Taking place in the depths of winter, the festival brings together camel herders from across the region to celebrate and preserve traditions that have been passed down through generations. From camel racing and traditional music to the daily rhythms of herding life, it offers a rare opportunity to witness a culture that is both enduring and evolving.

Beyond the festival itself, we will travel deeper into the Gobi to spend time with local families, gaining a more personal understanding of life in this harsh and beautiful environment. The winter landscape transforms the desert into a quiet, elemental space — vast, cold, and often dusted with snow — offering unique photographic opportunities and a different perspective on Mongolia.

This is a small, intimate journey designed for those comfortable with remote travel and seeking a meaningful experience beyond the usual routes. Alongside photography guidance and feedback, there will be time to slow down, observe, and engage with the people and places we encounter.

Open to both aspiring and professional photographers, as well as those seeking an authentic and immersive cultural experience, the trip also includes opportunities for camel riding, hiking, and extended time with the families we visit.

This trip is offered in partnership with Gobi Girl.

Why Mongolia?

From the open steppe to the high, snow-covered Altai Mountains and the vast expanse of the Gobi Desert, Mongolia is a country defined by space, movement, and a deep connection between people, animals, and land.

These journeys focus on photography and storytelling, but at their core they are about time spent with people. We travel to remote regions to meet herding families whose lives are shaped by the rhythms of the seasons, offering a rare and personal insight into a way of life that continues to adapt without losing its roots.

This is not a comfortable or polished experience. The roads are long, often rough, and distances can feel endless. But for those willing to embrace that, the rewards are profound. Time slows, perspectives shift, and what stays with you long after is not just what you photographed, but the people you met and the moments you shared.

Mongolia Gobi Desert – January 2026

“This tour was truly a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience. I never felt like a tourist. I felt like a guest.
Every detail was carefully planned. Claire is an inspiring guide, photographer and quickly became a friend. I cannot recommend her tours highly enough if you are looking for a unique and meaningful experience.”

Gobi Desert Winter Camel Festival Tour – January 2025

Mongolian Altai Tour – October 2024

“I took two trips with Claire, Altai and Gobi. I’ve been attracted to Mongolia as being a horse lover and always wanted to experience the life of the last nomadic people on earth. They are the heart of Mongolia surviving on the harsh land with their animals, and because I was visiting with Claire, I felt like I was accepted by them instantly. Because of her genuine love and passion towards those eagle hunters and camel herders, my experience from both trips was no comparison to the ordinary package tours. Touching people’s lives at a personal level is what Claire offers (not to mention riding a horse and a camel and many great photography moments).

She usually attracts people with genuine love and good heart and she leads a small group so bonding with fellow travelers is an added bonus.

So, thank you Claire, and I look very much forward to go on another trip with you next year!!”
