Powerful imagery plays a pivotal role in the humanitarian and development sectors, giving a face to crises and conflicts, and serving as a reminder of our shared humanity, yet disparate fates.
I began to appreciate the power of my own photography in 2012, when I launched a fundraising campaign to provide beds for vulnerable women and children living with HIV/AIDS in Ghana. At the time, I was volunteering with a small community-based organization that supports women living with HIV/AIDS and runs education programs to raise awareness of the condition. In collaboration with the organization, I photographed some of the women in their homes, hoping that the images would draw attention to their struggles and inspire support for the campaign. The photos played a central role in generating interest, and I was humbled to see how quickly people in the UK rallied behind the cause. Click here to read more about the Ghana Beds Project.
From 2017 to 2019, in addition to my photojournalism work, I worked as a photography consultant for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Iraq. My role was to capture the impact of UNDP-funded projects in areas affected by ISIS, showcasing the recovery efforts in places like the Old City of Mosul and the desert of western Anbar. I documented families rebuilding their lives, the restoration of essential infrastructure, and the empowerment of men and women through initiatives like cash-for-work programs. Over the course of two years, I captured the positive changes brought about by humanitarian development, focusing on the restoration of schools, hospitals, small businesses, roads, bridges, and essential services like water and electricity.
I continue to contribute to the communications work of several international NGOs and United Nations agencies. My clients include UNDP, UNHCR, UNMAS, UN Volunteers, Save the Children, Oxfam, War Child, Medair, Amnesty International, Global Response Management, CARE Germany, Nonviolent Peaceforce, Lighthouse Relief, and the International Rescue Committee.
