The Altai Mountains: Eagle Hunters and Herders of western Mongolia
Autumn 2026
Watching a golden eagle take flight from a rider’s arm, circle high above the mountains, and descend with precision, either landing on another hunter’s arm or striking its prey, is a remarkable thing to witness. It is a practice that has endured for generations, passed down through families who continue to live and work in the Altai Mountains of western Mongolia.
Join me this autumn for a photographic adventure in this remote and extraordinary landscape, where we will spend time with Kazakh eagle hunters and semi-nomadic herding families whose lives are shaped by their animals and the land.
Days are spent in the open landscape, moving between family homes, following the rhythms of daily life, and working with natural light as it shifts across the mountains. There is time to observe, to build trust, and to photograph in a way that goes beyond fleeting encounters.
This is not a staged encounter. We will visit and photograph families I have worked with over several years, including those featured in my work for The New York Times, offering a rare and personal insight into a way of life that is both deeply rooted and continually evolving.
Open to both aspiring and professional photographers, as well as those seeking an authentic and immersive cultural experience, the workshop includes dedicated photography guidance and feedback, along with opportunities for horse riding, hiking, and extended time with the families we visit.
This trip is offered in partnership with Nur Shuakh.
